TPASS 2.0+ & Taiwan Transit: Travel Like a Local in 2026

If there's one thing international students in Taiwan are most proud of, it's the incredibly modern and affordable public transport system. In 2026, with the upgraded TPASS 2.0+ program, traveling across cities is no longer a financial burden for students.

Here’s everything you need to know to master the roads and rails in Taiwan.

1. TPASS 2.0+: The Guardian of Your Wallet

TPASS is more than just a pass; it’s a discount ecosystem.

  • Expanded Reach: In 2026, TPASS 2.0+ integrated more long-distance national highway buses. You can now receive cashback rebates of 15-30% for intercity trips.
  • Monthly Passes: For around NT$1,200 per month (depending on the region), you get unlimited rides on the MRT, local buses, and Ubikes within your registered zone (North, Central, or South). This is the best value for students who commute daily.

Riding Ubike in Taiwan The public bicycle system allows students to travel flexibly while supporting green transport.

2. Ubike 2.0: Reaching Every Corner

Taiwan is a global paradise for public bicycles.

  • Unmatched Convenience: Borrow a bike at one station and return it at any other. With Ubike 2.0, all you need is a smartphone app or an EasyCard to start your journey.
  • The First 30 Minutes: Many cities (like Taichung and Kaohsiung) continue to offer the first 30 minutes for free to students. It’s a fantastic way to stay fit while saving money on short commutes.

3. MRT and Bus: A High-Tech Experience

  • Mobile Apps: Always have "Bus+" or "Google Maps" installed. Bus arrival times are accurate down to the second.
  • Etiquette: As mentioned in our previous guide, always let passengers exit before you board. On the MRT, eating and drinking (even chewing gum) are strictly prohibited and carry heavy fines.

Expert Advice

To avoid getting confused by station signage, build your transit-specific vocabulary with MonChinese. If you're planning a cross-island road trip, explore international travel blogs in English and level up your comprehension at MonGram English to discover hidden gems that local guides might miss.
