Getting Around Taiwan Without Getting Lost

Taiwan has one of the best public transportation systems in Asia, but it is designed for people who can read Traditional Chinese. Every sign, every announcement, every ticket machine defaults to Chinese first. This taiwan transportation guide gives you the essential vocabulary and phrases to navigate the MRT, city buses, and the high-speed rail system with confidence.

The Taipei MRT (捷運) is the easiest part of this taiwan transportation guide. Get a 悠遊卡 (EasyCard) from any convenience store for 100 TWD. Tap in, tap out. Key phrases:

  • 「請問,到台北車站怎麼走?」 — Excuse me, how do I get to Taipei Main Station?
  • 「要轉車嗎?」 — Do I need to transfer?
  • 「在哪裡加值?」 — Where can I top up my card?
  • 「下一站是什麼站?」 — What is the next stop?

Listen for the announcement: 「下一站:XX站,開門方向:左邊」 — Next stop: XX Station, doors open on the left.

2. Surviving the City Bus

Buses are trickier because routes are numbered and destinations are written entirely in Chinese:

  • 上車刷卡 (Shàng chē shuākǎ) — Tap card when boarding.
  • 下車刷卡 (Xià chē shuākǎ) — Tap card when getting off.
  • 「請問,這班車到XX嗎?」 — Does this bus go to XX?
  • 按鈴下車 (Àn líng xià chē) — Press the bell to get off.

3. High-Speed Rail (高鐵) and Taiwan Railways (台鐵)

For longer trips between cities:

  • 高鐵 (Gāotiě — HSR): Taipei to Kaohsiung in 90 minutes. Book online or at the station.
  • 台鐵 (Táitiě — TRA): Cheaper, stops at more stations, great for exploring smaller cities.
  • 「我要買到台中的票」 — I want to buy a ticket to Taichung.
  • 「幾號月台?」 — Which platform?
  • 「自由座」 (Zìyóu zuò) — Unreserved seat (cheaper).
  • 「對號座」 (Duìhào zuò) — Reserved seat.

4. Navigate Taiwan with MonChinese

MonChinese includes transportation and direction vocabulary flashcard sets. Practice reading station names and direction signs in Traditional Chinese so your commute becomes effortless.

Conclusion

This taiwan transportation guide covers the three pillars of getting around: MRT for the city, buses for local routes, and trains for intercity travel. Get an EasyCard, learn the key phrases, and explore Taiwan with confidence.
